An hourly visual schedule is an organizational tool that is helpful when transitioning from one activity to the next. For this type of schedule the left side can be used for scheduled items and once completed the image card can be moved to the right side.
Why Are Hourly Schedules Important
All young children can benefit from this tool! People with Autism do especially well with this type of tool because they are wired in a way that their brains crave patterns and predictability. Knowing exactly what comes next is important because it reduces anxiety. People with Autism can get overwhelmed by the anxiety of “not knowing” that may cause behavioral issues or meltdowns. Simply being able to see what comes next reduces that worry and increases the person’s willingness to transition.
