A first-then board is an organizational tool that is helpful when transitioning from one activity to the next. It is also a great way to introduce toddlers to the concept of a visual schedule.
Why Are First-Then Boards Important
All young children can benefit from this tool! People with Autism do especially well with this type of tool because they are wired in a way that their brains crave patterns and predictability. Knowing exactly what comes next is important because it reduces anxiety. People with Autism can get overwhelmed by the anxiety of “not knowing” that may cause behavioral issues or meltdowns. Simply being able to see what comes next reduces that worry and increases the person’s compliance since they may see the schedule as a rigid rule that they have to follow.
